Terms of Use
These terms apply to the Lorelight app and the website lorelight.app, offered by Maximalisme B.V., Atoomweg 63, 3542 AA Utrecht, the Netherlands (Chamber of Commerce/KvK 67162142, VAT NL856855832B01). By using Lorelight you accept these terms.
App Store and Google Play
On iPhone and iPad you download the app through Apple's App Store. Your licence to use the app is then governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (Standard EULA). These terms add to it. If these terms and the Standard EULA conflict on the licence to use the app, the Standard EULA prevails. Maximalisme B.V., not Apple, is responsible for the app, its content and its support.
On Android you download the app through Google Play. The Google Play Terms of Service also apply to your download and your purchases. Maximalisme B.V., not Google, is responsible for the app, its content and its support.
What Lorelight is
Lorelight offers short, illustrated films about history and philosophy, each ending with a lesson, together with background texts and reading suggestions. Lorelight is meant for inspiration and general education. It is not an academic source and not professional advice.
Made with the help of AI
We write and check every story ourselves. The images, animation, narration and music of the films are made with the help of generative AI tools, which we direct and edit. Images are artistic interpretations, not historical records, and may contain details that are not historically accurate. Where a story is legend rather than established history, we say so. If you spot an error, please let us know.
Free stories and Lorelight+
Some stories are free. The full library requires Lorelight+: a subscription or the one-time lifetime purchase. All purchases are made in the app and sold and billed by Apple through the App Store (iPhone and iPad) or by Google through Google Play (Android), at the price shown in your local currency (including VAT) before you buy.
Subscriptions: yearly and monthly
- Yearly subscription, which starts with a 7-day free trial if your Apple Account or Google account is eligible for it. If you do not cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, the yearly subscription starts automatically and the price is charged to your Apple Account or Google account.
- Monthly subscription, without a trial.
- Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period and at the then-current price, unless you turn off automatic renewal at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Apple or Google charges the renewal around the end of the period.
- Cancel at any time: on iPhone or iPad in Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions, or in the App Store; on Android in the Google Play app › your profile picture › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. After cancelling, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. If you cancel during the free trial, you will not be charged.
- If the price of a subscription changes, Apple or Google informs you in advance and, where required, asks for your consent.
Lifetime purchase
Lifetime is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: you pay once and there are no renewals. It gives you access to all stories in the Lorelight library, including stories we add later, for as long as we offer the Lorelight service. "Lifetime" refers to the lifetime of the service, not to a fixed number of years. You can restore the purchase on any iPhone or iPad signed in with the same Apple Account, or on any Android device with the same Google account. Because there is no Lorelight account, a purchase cannot be moved between the App Store and Google Play.
We intend to keep Lorelight running for many years. If we ever decide to stop the service permanently, we will announce this at least six months in advance in the app and on this website. Your rights under mandatory consumer law remain unaffected.
Refunds and right of withdrawal
Because Apple and Google handle all payments, refunds and the right of withdrawal are handled by them under their own terms. For a purchase in the App Store, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple handles it under the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. For a purchase in Google Play, the Google Play refund policy applies: within 48 hours of buying you can request a refund in Google Play yourself; after that, email us and, if a refund is due, we arrange it through Google Play. We never receive your payment details. Your statutory rights as a consumer remain unaffected.
Use of our content
All films, texts, images, narration and music in Lorelight belong to Maximalisme B.V. or its licensors. You may watch them for your own, personal and non-commercial use. You may share links to our public videos and share lesson cards through the share function of the app. You may not copy, download, record, re-upload, sell or otherwise distribute our content, or use it to train AI models, without our written permission.
Availability and changes
We work hard to keep Lorelight available and to add new stories, but we cannot guarantee that the service is always free of errors or interruptions. We may change, add or remove stories and features, for example when we improve a film. Narration and subtitles are added story by story, so not every story is available in every language at the same time. If we make a change that significantly reduces what you paid for, we will let you know in advance.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law, Maximalisme B.V. is not liable for indirect damage or for damage resulting from decisions based on the content of the stories. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for Lorelight in the twelve months before the event that caused the damage. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights under mandatory consumer law.
Privacy
How we handle personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.
Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when we add features. We update the date at the top and announce important changes in the app or on this website in advance. Changes do not affect a period you have already paid for. These terms are available in several languages; if they differ, the English version prevails.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by Dutch law. If you are a consumer living in another country, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of that country. Disputes are submitted to the competent court in Amsterdam, unless mandatory law gives you the right to go to a court where you live. Please contact us first; we would much rather solve a problem together.
